International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) are health care professionals who specialize in the clinical management of breastfeeding. Lactation is a relatively new field of science and credentialing and licensure did not begin until around 25 years ago. There are only about 15,000 IBCLCs in the United States and the field is growing to meet the needs of mothers and babies. IBCLCs work in hospitals, private practices, pediatric offices, and in WIC programs. Private insurance and Medicaid now cover many of the services provided by IBCLCs and consider lactation consultations to be preventive heathcare.
