Breast-feeding is a skill that is learned by mother and baby. Just like any skill, it comes more naturally for some than others, but for most, it takes 3-4 weeks before it is perfected. There are, at times though, situations that make practicing breastfeeding more difficult. A lactation consultant can assist with determining barriers to a good latch. Whether the issue originates from mom or baby, an experienced IBCLC can assist with a plan of care to resolve many breastfeeding difficulties.
